can’t stay logged in.
Never an issue before, and not on other sites, but since my new phone came, I can’t stay logged into the forum. Anyone else seen this on the iPhone 12 running IOS 14.2.

For what it’s worth, and I hope this helps others. For some reason my bookmarks were the http not the https secure version. Once I edited everything, the https url keeps me logged in.

Wonderful Mr. Bites! Great for you that you figured it out!

Re: can’t stay logged in.
The same thing happened to me right after I saw your first post and that was the same fix I found. I think some recent updates were responsible for it.

This has started happening to me as of yesterday. I check the box to stay logged in, but I'm getting kicked out. Not sure how long I'm staying logged in.

Re: can’t stay logged in.
Usually the first step is to clear your browser cookies and cache. I just noticed that the forum has a link in the footer to clear the cookies. Maybe try that? If that doesn't work then reboot, haha.

Re: can’t stay logged in.
Well, I shut down every night and usually that cleans everything out. I also delete all history and cookies, clean out cache, etc. every night as well. I try to keep track to see if any unusual happens outside of CKTG.

I'm staying logged in today. I'm beginning to think some browser (FireFox) problems are caused by certain videos on YouTube.

Re: can’t stay logged in.
i don't think that's actually the problem, but i have noticed issues like that for some of my users with phpBB (other sites obviously), and it's been hard to pin down and reproduce.
that said, i notice http -> https redirect here doesn't exist (although it looks like phpBB itself might be doing it in some cases). i suggest that the admin creates one.
i see you're reverse proxying through cloudflare and are using their edge certificate...
accomplishing this would be very easy even in their free plan.
https://developers.cloudflare.com/ssl/e ... use-https/
SSL/TLS > Edge Certificates > Always Use HTTPS
this would enable it globally for chefknivestogoforums.com.
you can also accomplish the same thing (with more control if needed) using a page rule ("Always Use HTTPS"), redirect, or bulk redirect.
alternatively, you could do the redirect on your origin server, but just don't do it both on cloudflare and at the origin.
Re: can’t stay logged in.
hrm.. i notice other potential issues
1) you don't have a 301 redirect for chefknivestogoforums.com -> www.chefknivestogoforums.com
2) unlike www.chefknivestogoforums.com, chefknivestogoforums.com is not reverse proxied. you're exposing your host and not relying on cloudflare for protection or caching
3) there's no AAAA record for chefknivestogoforums.com, so it has no IPv6 connectivity. the www subdomain is IPv6 connectable because of cloudflare, though. you have a mix of www and not-www links floating around, and IPv6 users won't be able to follow links from the former to the latter.

Re: can’t stay logged in.
Sansho, maybe it's just you, or my browser, but I am not seeing the behavior you mention. In Chrome every time I try and go to http (either the root domain, the www subdomain, or a link to some random thing) it is redirected to https which is using a Cloudflare certificate. Also, if I try to go to the root domain it is redirected to the www domain.
Furthermore, the IPv6 issue is because their hosting company does not support IPv6 and is largely out of the control of CKTG. If you only function on IPv6 you wont see a large portion of the internet without a connection of some sort to IPv4 (there are a bunch of ways to do this and it is usually done upstream somewhere near the backbone).
I am not disagreeing with you about the tech used to run the forum or the site but at the end of the day, while many of us strive for some perfection in the industries we know, we must remember that Mark sells knives and the forum here is just a fun thing to have. Hopefully the person who does all of his tech work for him reads this topic.
It sure would be nice if email notifications worked.
EDIT: I do recall that Chrome added a feature a little while back to automatically redirect http to https, so that is likely my browser. I did not actually research this at all.

Re: can’t stay logged in.
hey ex..
first of all, these are just minor issues. just trying to help though.
for the http -> https thing, yeah, it's either your browser, or it's phpBB doing it in certain circumstances. i can personally reproduce it in chrome by doing this:
for the ipv6 thing.. the thing is, www is connectable because they use cloudflare for it. cloudflare does ipv6 at the edge and bridges to v4 at origin. if they put non-www on cloudflare too, an ipv6 user following a link from www to root would not have problems. in addition, auto redirect to www since allowing both is goofy and leads to these kinds of problems in the first place.
i see they're already using cloudflare for dns which is a good start.
so my overall recommendations are (can all be done in the cloudlfare dashboard):
1) dns and reverse proxying fixups
2) http -> https redirect

1) dns and reverse proxying fixups
- website > chefknivestogoforums.com > dns
- create/modify as needed to get the following records. the 'proxy status' orange cloud thing should be turned on for the ones i mention...
- A: @ -> 70.32.28.146 (proxied)
- CNAME: www -> chefknivestogoforums.com (proxied)
2) http -> https redirect
- website > chefknivestogoforums.com > ssl/tls > edge certificates
- enable Always Use HTTPS
- website > chefknivestogoforums.com > rules > redirect rules
- they changed the redirect system, so unfortunately i can't figure this one out for you except by trial and error, and i can't do that on any of my websites since i'm using my origin server instead of cloudflare to do redirects like that.

Re: can’t stay logged in.
The authoritative name server is at A2 Hosting BTW. I get what you are saying though, it's an easy fix. But so is my whole rant about the DNS records for email authentication that are broken and/or missing that I linked to. It would take me all of a handful of minutes to fix that. Like I said though, to people who don't know any better the forum seems to be working fine so why pay to fix it (I would fix the email thing for free just because I like it here but it would take someone else's time and trust who has access). I guess when it goes down at least there will be a record that we tried.

Re: can’t stay logged in.
LOL!
i guess i looked at the wrong domain:
still though, they could change the dns over to cloudflare for the right one.
