Ok, so many thoughts . . .

1) I suppose that if it had turned into a Van Gogh situation, the video would have never made it to youtube but I still felt some suspense.

2) He really was showing off by doing the top. I mean, it wasn't at all necessary!

3) Good thing he doesn't have any neckfurters. That would have been a much harder task if he did.

4) I hope he washed that cleaver well before service.

On #2, did you see the amount of removed hair on the blade?

Oh, sure but that seemed to be mostly from the sides.

True. I guess he wanted a matched set of center hair and 'rim' hair

Just as a bit of background I started blade shaving (my moustache) at 13 and developed a "heavy" beard. Somewhere down the track, maybe 10+ years or so, I went down the electric razor route. The problem was that I could destroy an electric razor in short order and went through a few of them over the next 5 years or so. Finally, back to wet shaving and I've blade shaved for decades since, going from the old standard safety razor to Gillette's Mach 3 and aerosol gels & cremes. Tried the 4-blade & 5-blade razors, but settled on the Mach 3.

I've had an Italian boar brush for decades and recently purchased a peony-based soap puk and started doing my own lathering again. What a joy I'd forgotten just how good that brush felt. Somehow I've lost the skill and I need a lot more practice at developing a good lather.

Anyway, back to ronnie's quote above, which prompted this response. My wife used to cut my hair using electric clippers, all over with a #2 comb. Haircut due, all set up & my wife started at the back of my neck, straight up and over the top of my head. I thought it felt a bit different and sure enough there was no comb attached to the clippers Long story short we called it the "no-hawk" & went for the zero cut all over and I now cut my own hair

Ditch the Mach 3 stuff. Gillette 7 O'Clock Super Platinum DE blades and a DE razor. I use the Merkur 37C slant (the slant presents the edge at a slight angle to the hair instead of perpendicular so it cuts better, especially with wiry hair, slices vs straight push) razor and I can get 8-10 good shaves from each blade. I got some good shaving soap that my local barber makes for like $6 a puck of it and it has lasted around a year I think!

Marketing was tremendously effective at changing the consumer's desire to buy cartridge over DE and straights. The shave comfort is not in the same ballpark, and the hair is not pulled but cleanly cut, unlike "the" cartridge.

@taz & @ ITB. Thanks for coming back with some info & views. I'll run down my existing supplies and then I guess start digging that rabbit hole .......
