Feedback on new handle shape?

Post by Bensbites »

Many are familiar with my rehandling services, focusing on tapered octagonal wa handles. I have been contemplating the introduction of tapered turned wa handles. I am posting the CAD designs for this new tapered concept versus the tapered octagonal wa handle. Your input is valued!

well, I'm no expert, but in the past, I have sanded down the corners of octagonal handles a bit if they were "sharp". But a little bit of a ridge helps keep the blade from rotating in the hand, especially if there is a bit of oil on the handle. So, to me your new design would be a good hybrid shape. I say go for it!

Thank you! I plan on it!

I'm intriqued, different handle shapes always interest me, but I don't think I could form an opinion without having one in hand to actually feel it. I've only handled octagon handles so far, though they have each had different dimensions. I've never tried an oval handle, but this is like something between the two.

I'm curious how you came up with the shape. Did it have more of an ergonomic design goal, an aesthetic goal, or maybe even a manufacturing goal? I think aesthetically it would deffinitely look better than an oval handle. I'm not sure if it is as good looking as an octagon, but I do like that it isn't typical, and uniqueness counts for something for sure. One of the handle designs that has caught my interest, partly just because it is weird, is the kite handle, which is octagon on top, and oval on the bottom, (which really makes it not an octagon but you get the idea.)

So overall, without being able to feel it in hand, I think it looks pretty neat, and gets points for uniqueness.

To answer “how did I come up with this idea”. I always like to put my own spin on everything I make. People recognize the proportions and design of my octagonal wa handles.i am not the only one who does handles this way, but I have a style.

With these handles, I was trying to think of how I can use my lathe to make wa handles. There are pros and cons to the lathe vs the other jigs, after several iterations in my head… hear we are. These should be very easy to pilot in the shop.. but shop time is at a premium these days.
