Help me design my next batch of knives.

Post by Bensbites »

I have plenty of 1/16th inch AEBL 2 inches tall in the shop. I am thinking of a more budget friendly batch of knives. Help me design them! Ktip or Gyuto?

I've never had a k-tip, so I'm no help. Best of luck with the project.

Why not both & appeal to a wider market?? Gyutos are more popular than "K" tips, so how about a 25% : 75% split or even maybe a 66% : 34% split if you're a gambling man 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)

Mine is possibly a minority opinion, but I don’t like K-tips. The point of a gyuto shape Is not only aesthetically cleaner, but more useful for those tip jobs.

I don't care for k-tips. I also think a gyuto will have broader appeal.

Hey Ben.
My 2 and a half cents....

I'd say it depends a bit on who your buyer is. If you know. I'm almost always reaching for a gyuto but I appreciate K Tips and use them frequently. But, knife nerd that I am, we're in the minority....

Gyutos as stated above are more functional so if you're targeting pros or power users I bet you get more uptake on them.

But... K Tips look badass and are sexy... Fashion conscious buyer? Might be the way to go.

Thank you all for the feedback. I also posted this to knife a facebook group and IG.

The knife makers that dominate my IG followers, suggested gyutos. The knife enthusiast facebook people, minus the makers in that group wanted ktips.

I will make 3-4 of each with this batch.

Thank you!!

This batch has been heat treated, ground, and marked. Next up sharpening , then they are for sale! AEB-L, 1/16th in thick at the spine. 2 inches tall at the heel, approximately 200-210 mm long.

Which one should I keep??

Which handle would you choose? This one is staying in my kitchen.

I think something like these would sell well.

I am way behind on this, but I would love to see a scimitar, maybe 12 ish inches. Chef's knives are great, but I have way too many.

I seriously doubt I could ever afford a full size one, so maybe a scaled down one? A foot or less? Could come in useful as a back scratcher or a letter opener. :D

Ben, I would choose the one on the right. It seems to complement the knife well.

12 inches would be easier for me to heat treat. I will trace the design and see about getting it waterjet.

I'm old school, I'd never rip jeans intentionally! Also, I'd never pay extra to get them pre-ripped (one of the more stupid things I've seen in my life, and I existed (I can say lived) in Klamath Falls, Oregon for years!); "It's not hell, you can just see it from there."

So... do you want this sharpened ? Like a butcher knife or pairing knife? Handle material?

Wood handle material. While it wouldn't need to be razor sharp, better fit and finish on what is displayed in that picture please! A pairing knife would be fine.
