60 grit with some mileage

Post by ken123 »

Well we always are looking at new stones without any use so I thought I'd show this one - a 60 grit Nubatama... Started out 2 inches thick.

Is that after you used it once?

I always love working up enough mud on the 60 to where it not only holds water, but eventually gets thick like a paste. That’s a lot of reps Ken, what you working on there?

How do you flatten such a stone?

Which steels does this stone work best on?

This was done by a customer who forges his own steels in a forge. Knowledgeable guy.

I use either a 24 grit stone or a 46 grit diamond plate to flatten these. These stones work on a wide variety of steels but not that well on high vanadium steels.

Have you tried the Manticore stone for vanadium steels Ken? Your advice is always appreciated.

My platinums are my first choice starting at 150 grit, very consistent for a very wide array of steels.

Which such 46-grit diamond plate do you recommend for this?

It is a custom plate that I carry. Very fast. I also use it to flatten badly dished stones etc. It does produce a coarse scratch pattern but it gets things done. You might finish your surfaces with a 140 grit plate afterwards. Here's a 46 grit plate flattening a 150 bamboo for reference.

Ahh and this was me. I am the bladesmith that he mentioned. That is my beloved asphalt stone that I shall never see another of again. It breaks my heart learning of his passing and not.interacting with him here.

This was the blade I was working on

I use all of his synthetics when making nihonto inspired work, honyaki and sanmai. His stones were more or less the foundation of my work. I'm really hurt by his passing. Emotionally and professionally. RIP.
