Diamond stones

Post by joeshunt5 »

I am looking for a diamond stone to reprofile and edge.

What would you choose, the Atoma or the matrix plate?

I was thinking the lower grits like 140 to set the bevel and maybe one more grit a little higher. I would then finish with the shaptons.

I love Atoma plates. 400 works for me.

If I was using one for a knife I really like the Atoma. I’ve used a few. The CKTG 140 is the best value but I like the Atoma for the pattern on the diamond face. I also have two DMT diamond stones that are 10x4 inch and do a great job on edges. The CKTG 140 for 30 bucks is an incredible value and will do a good job, I like a bit more after it’s been used for awhile as far as knife work goes but it’s a good stone.

I've been using the KME diamond stones and I glued them to the Edge Pro blanks. I have the a 4 stone set that works really well.

I also added a DMT 4" aligner extra, extra fine to this before buying the Venev Bonded Diamond water stones. The diamond stones will take quite a while before they break in and the scratch pattern smoothes out. These are the 5 stones I have been using before I bought the Venev Bonded Diamond water stones. I would recommend these over traditional diamonds because they do not require any break in period and they polish much, much better.

Been intrigued by the Venev stones for awhile now. I think I’m gonna try one, full sized just to see what these are all about.

The 2/3 micron stone leaves a very near mirror polish that you can either follow with the Spyderco Ultra fine or any other similar micron stone to smooth out the diamond scratch pattern. When I follow that progression with the Spyderco Ultra Fine, it push cuts with ease and pops arm hair all day!

Very late reply to this. Curious what you ended up getting. Did you consider the EP diamond stones? The 80 grit stone cuts like crazy and leave a better edge to clean up than a surface mounted diamond stone. You could follow that with the EP diamond 250 or Shapton Glass 220.

I have s 150 'Ken' plate that holds up very well. Also have a 3000 grit diamond place that works very well to follow an Atoma 1200.
