The bottom one is how far I want him to take it before sending it to me.

I like that! We can play with the final profile and edge profile as we grind the blade, so it looks like a good blank canvas!

Looks good Tim, just a little thinner behind the edge.

Re: Hammer forged knife blanks
Yeah, I worked on it again yesterday and converted it to a Wa handle tang. The stock was actually .140" thick on the handle/spine, so I have been working it down to a more normal/lighter thickness and working the regrind a bit more. It has a no plunge grind, so the heel/choil shot shows where the grind is there and it tapers more as it goes down the blade, kind of like Sabatiers. It's around 7.5" long now for the blade and kinda between a gyuto and santoku profile wise. Going to get a natural canvas micarta handle, still debating between a frame style western or Octagon Wa frame handle. I have another piece of softer felt to use on my platen to see if that gives more of a convex to the blade, the stuff on now is pretty hard/firm, with very little give. My thinner stock finally shipped yesterday, .140" thick steel is a beast! I have some .094 and .070 coming in
This is where it is when I stopped yesterday:

Re: Hammer forged knife blanks
Finished this one up today. Tried a softer F3 felt platen to get more convex to the edge. If I can grind .140" thick, 61 rockwell S30v, I can grind the hammer forged blanks! Put me down for a few blanks Mark!!

I'm so excited and I just can't hide it. But I digress.
Just can't wait to see what everyone does with these blanks. And I shudder to think how much they'll cost, if anyone sells them.

You can blame Mr. Suburban for my being here.

Re: Hammer forged knife blanks
FYI. There are several places to buy San Mia billets for us makers. Alpha knife supply and New Jersey steel Barron come to mind. You are looking at about $100 for a billet to make a 210 or 240.
Here is one example.

410SS / 52100 San Mai 13x2x0.13 inch is $90
52100 11.5x2x0.138 inches is $15.

Makers Material Supply sometimes has Japanese san mai steels, $130-$200+ though. San Mai is pretty pricey!

Re: Hammer forged knife blanks
My guess is these blanks are going to sell for under $40 but I didn’t ask the price so it’s a surprise. My other guess is it’s going to be white #2 clad.
I didn’t want to slow things down by asking questions.

Re: Hammer forged knife blanks
Ok here is what I got.
12 fanayuki blanks, white #1 steel, clad, 180mm
12 funayuki blanks, white #1 steel, clad, 210mm
No heat treat. No handles. He’s going to shape them a little more than the picture I posted so they’re not so wonky.
$45 for the 180mm
$60 for the 210mm
Isaiah is going to let me use some of his equipment including his knife oven.

Re: Hammer forged knife blanks
1) are you heat treating them?
2) what are they clad with? Soft iron?
3) sign me up for a couple.

1) No I thought it would be more educational to burn down our garages trying to do them ourselves.
2) Yes I think they're iron-clad. Should be easy to work.
3) Ok

Since it’s white steel, I am planning a water quench. I know lots of experienced people will yell at me about oil vs water… I still like waterChefKnivesToGo wrote: ↑Mon May 03, 2021 1:20 pm1) No I thought it would be more educational to burn down our garages trying to do them ourselves.

Re: Hammer forged knife blanks
Kalaeb, check out Jarod Todd for heat treating. I have over 30 blades at his place now getting ready to ship back to me. He can do all sorts of alloys, too and does bulk pricing for total # of blades, not just each alloy. I had Peters do AEB-L for me years ago and they did a great job, but Jarod has gotten rave reviews and I know Timos (Tim Johnson) uses him for blades as well (I did a sheath for one of his san mai blades and sharpened it and it took an awesome edge, sharpened really nicely!). It looks like around $16 for one blade plus shipping, but less if you have a few blades to send. I have 5160, AEB-L, 440C, D2, Elmax, S35VN and Alabama Carbon Damascus with him now.

I used Jarrod before I got my paragon and will second the recommendation.taz575 wrote: ↑Tue May 04, 2021 12:10 am Kalaeb, check out Jarod Todd for heat treating.
