Handles - $75-85

Post by delmar »

I was going to get a little handle maker page set up, but I'm slammed at work and will be slammed for some time. I got most of these together about a year ago, but time to move on. I've got a load of other wood that either needs to get made into handles or re-sold - so these need to go.

All stabilized unless ebony, katalox, ziricote, cocobolo, horn, metal, G10, bog oak

Dimensions are in this ballpark, some a bit more, some a bit less - PM for particular dimensions if needed.
ferrule tops 19x21.5, +/- 0.5; butts 21 x 24, +/- 0.5mm.
Lengths are 146.5 +/- 1.5mm.

All have slotted dowels and tang slots broached - just need to file them out to final. I have files - $5 if you need it.

I'd consider doing installs, but it adds to the pricing (shipping to/from, insurance). So I've tried to set these up DIY.

Asian satinwood, figured mesquite, ziricote, figured maple, koa - $75

Rest - $85

Includes shipping to CONUS via USPS.

PM for question/specifics if you need more info.

Whoa these are all so pretty, I just don't have the knives for all of them! (I know that's a fixable problem also)

Really nice. I'm curious if you'd ship to Canada and what the shipping adjustment might be (preferred shipping to Canada via USPS.

Ha ha. Not far off...

I started buying up wood a few years back, and it has filled up an entire tool chest and much of my bench. I just needed to start pumping stuff out. I never intended to make a living out of it, just have some fun, pay for wood and tool purchases, a little extra dough for a knife or two. And I needed to stay off the mountain bike trails as much as possible or I was going to seriously injury myself, so playing with power tools sounded much safer ([insert sarcasm]).

I've still got a ton of wood. Just received a 4 pack of insanely eyed burl, enough for 8 handles. I've got to stay off IG looking at blanks. It's annoying satisfying, but waaaaaaay too easy with PP and Venmo these days.

If only I like to install handles, I could sell much more. But I just don't like all the receiving, safely storing and shipping.

On 21 - 23 what I would call the "wood" part of the handle (in red below), it is listed as amber, but it sure doesn't look like amber to me. Typo?
21 amber, copper, kalatox, copper, amber, copper, amber (138.5mm long)
22 amber, nickel silver, katalox, nickel silver, amber, nickel silver, amber (135mm long)(petite dimensions)
23 amber, brass, katalox, brass, amber, brass, amber

Katalox (aka Mexican Royal Ebony) are the mains. I listed materials from left (butt) to right (top of ferrule). It's a cool wood that is very dense like ebony or ironwood. It often has a hint of red/purple and keeps it (unlike purple heart, which fades out) for quite a long time and can be renewed quickly with high grit sandpaper. Like ebony, no need to stabilize as it naturally is very stable and oily. It can be a pain to work with - dulls cutters, wears out abrasives, and needs a good acetone wipe just before gluing - but it's worth it.

The accents are faux amber. Real amber is a resin and melts with heat very easily - also splits very easily on drilling. Cutting and sanding is much like plexiglass and presents difficulties that aren't worth it with synthetic amber fairly available and much easier to work with.

Thanks! Obviously I was reading right to left, what I would consider the top of the handle down. Sigh. A former coworker once told me that my brain works like no one else's. Guess I proved it again.

The handles look great.
