Yo to Wa

Post by atang »

I’ll start off by mentioning that I usually don’t do handles. Installing them is one thing; making handles is another story. With that out of the way, here’s a Barclay Forge chef knife that needed some new shoes.

Initially I was thinking just replace the handle with the same stock look.

As I was test sharpening it, the metal is indeed soft yet the edge retention is good enough that steeling it often should still give a very long time between sharpening sessions for any home cook. The blade is stamped “STAINLESS JAPAN” and performs as such. After taking the handle off and seeing what I was working with, it was clear she needed to get an upgrade; not just a replacement. Decided to make an amboyna burl with silver nickel spacer sporting a mosaic pin inlay on the butt end. Thanks for checking it out!

Is that... your first handle??
That's quite the upgrade! Well done!

Thank you kindly. Not the first handle I’ve made but it is my first conversion. I mainly focus on blade sharpening and repair although sometimes I’m extended beyond normal requests. With all the processes involved with knife making/repair these occurrences are sometimes unavoidable. However I think there are instances where the challenge for a desired outcome are warranted (this being one of them). I don’t consider myself a knife maker as I don’t forge but the other elements of knife making (particularly blade shaping) within the finishing process are amazing to me. Woodworking as a whole is quite an in depth trade. I do appreciate the opportunity to share my journey and growth on the forum. Thank you!

Very nice job. The last conversion I did for myself, a pro chef pointed out I forgot to ease the choil and finger notch area. That was a learning experience.
