Re: Diamond Matrix vs. Shapton or Chosera for EP?
I know on this forum that there are different opinions on carbides & the "chocolate cookie" effect. I still have an open mind on this, but the engineer in me is evidence based, and despite asking three or four times on the forum, if someone with access to an scanning electron microsco...

Re: Diamond Matrix vs. Shapton or Chosera for EP?
If you are going to sharpen high carbide wear resistant steels, I would highly suggest using the Edge Pro Diamond Matrix stones or diamond stones in general. Shapton Glass stones are only going to cut wear resistant steels with less than 4% Vanadium, that is just how they were designed. I have quite...

Re: Diamond stones
I would really like to see the results from a very high powered microscope. I'm wondering if it's possible that the carbides are actually being dulled by softer stones versus being sharpened by the diamonds

Re: Apex & scissors
Rob did a really great review on the Apex Scissor attachment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YuFKDeepgyg Is he here on CKTG? I've watched many of his videos over time and quite like him. Greetings Jason! Rob isn't active on this forum but I'm sure he would have no problem answering questions by em...

Re: Diamond stones
High carbide steels are more abrasion resistant and most of the waterstones on the market won't properly cut the carbides. I've even read about carbides being torn out by alumina based stones, though this seems to be controversial in the sharpening world. Silicone carbide and diamonds are the most e...

Re: Arashiyama 1k and 6k
I believe these 2 stones are highly underrated for their use on the softer steels.

Re: Arashiyama 1k and 6k
I'm amazed at how quick the 6k removes the scratch pattern from the 1k. I could have gotten a better polish if I had used a stone in between these 2 but I'm still very pleased with their performance as a 1-2 combination after a tight grit progession. I didn't soak these, just splash and go. I have r...

Arashiyama 1k and 6k
Sharpener's remorse: Selling the Arashiyama 1k and 6k. These are two very special stones to me that I started hand sharpening with years ago. I was decent at hand sharpening but found that I was lacking in precision when it came to my edges. I decided to sell the full size versions of these stones a...

Re: EP rec for a total novice...
I think that the TSProf and another brand, the Mad Edge which I have on order, ( I'll review here ) have a very nice advantage over the Wicked Edge. I do have a Hapstone V6 but found the price for their clamp a little pricey, especially compared to the Mad Edge. Mad Edge said on their YouTube channe...

Re: EP rec for a total novice...
I have also thought about getting the TSProf. It looks like it is the best of both worlds and offers much more versatility than the Wicked Edge.

Re: Edge pro use my way
I've never had good results with lapping film except for polishing. The edge is always more coarse than the micron rating suggests. I always get a more refined edge with the stones.

Re: Spyderco UF
They are fantastic and if you don't mind cleaning them often, a very nice substitute for the more expensive water stones. The edge that any of the Spyderco ceramics produce is phenomenal for the price.

Thank you! I was surprised at how easy the M390 sharpened being a high carbide steel.

I use them on my Hapstone V6. They work well for recurves and serrations.

Spyderco UF
I got a Spyderco UF Edge Pro format from Ken Schwartz and this is probably my most prized stone, next to the yaginoshima asagi I got from Ken as well. There was an initial problem with the stone and Ken handled it superbly. This pic is straight off of the Spydero UF on a Steel Will Modus in M390. Sh...

Re: Which diamond stone and strop combo?
I would definitely recommend the 2k before the 4k especially after a diamond progression. One of my favorite progressions is using the Spyderco ceramics after diamonds. The only caveat is that you have to clean them. You can buy the Medium and Fine and mount them to Edge Pro blanks. Ken Schwartz sel...

Re: Hapstone V6
Gentlemen, I apologize for not responding promptly. The problem with the Wicked Edge for me, is that if a knife is too narrow, or too flexible, it is much more difficult to sharpen. To my knowledge, there has been no development in either of these scenarios. The Tormek small knife attachment is extr...
