Re: Damascus!!

I took the little cut off piece from the end of the billet after I did the 1st draw out at 16 layers and etched it. Layers look nice!! The deep scratches are from using a very coarse file to flatten it quickly so I could etch it. cutoff.jpg The billet now has 6 times the layers :) I gotta get a cut ...

Re: Latest knife!

I like the 2 and 3 pattern pin. Your handles look well shaped, rounded and finished, too! You aren't very far off of your Dad's quality from the pictures! I have been gravitating to using 3/16" pins more often. Big enough to look nice, small enough not to take up the entire handle and I don't h...

Re: How much to fix this?

Can you sharpen it? That chip will come out mostly in a few sharpening sessions. Or you can just put the flat angle of the front of the blade onto the stone and sharpen it down to a point again, or change the tip angle slightly and just sharpen the portion right above the chip. Good time to get a ch...

Re: Latest knife!

I like the extra pins you did at the front and back, but be careful getting them too close to the edge of the handle. Wood (even stabilized) can crack with temp/humidity changes, especially with pins close to the edge. I would center the pins more so the middle pins are in the middle of the tang hei...

Re: Damascus Pizza cutter??

Nothing...it's not mine! Lol. Its one at Dragons Breath Forge. They have a few in the 250# plus range! I picked up a used NC Big Face on FB for $350. Dragons Breath has some nice 200# anvils for $600, which is an excellent deal! Bigger anvils are more efficient at moving metal and are more solid, bu...

Re: Strops making straight razor dull.

Yeah, probably over stropping or using too much pressure! Water will make the strops base softer and more likely to round the edge out if you use too much pressure since the strop will give more.

Re: What did you cook today?

Yeah, the Nazel is a beast! Even the 50kg smaller one worked fast! 90 minutes from setting a weld to almost a 3' bar! It took me almost 2 hours to hand draw out a 1.3" x 1.7" x 1.5" bar into a knife billet...lol.

Re: Damascus Pizza cutter??

The handle shape works really well on choppers, but is super comfy on smaller blades too! The low layer count is dramatic, but most people want the tighter layers. I booked a shop day for this Weds so I am hoping to draw, cut, stack, weld and redraw the main billet out! Should get me to around 100 l...

Re: Damascus Pizza cutter??

Yeah, it doesn't have many layers (only 16 to start, and I had to grind into it a bit to get it cleaned up), but I am really happy with how it came out! Can't wait to work on the main billet more and get more layers into it!! May hit up a local forge next Weds to try to draw out the bar further, cut...

Re: Thin this knife to improve performance?

Yeah, they work fast for sharpening, but removing steel like you did takes a lot of grunt work to do it by hand! You are removing steel from a much wider area, so it takes a while to see results. With a narrow section on a thin edge, they are fast and all of the pressure is on a small area. Once you...

Re: Damascus Pizza cutter??

Decided to forge out a little chunk by hand.
Only 16 layers, but it came out nice! Starting chunk was 16 layers, 1.3" tall, 1.7" wide and around 1.4" long.

Damascus!!

Took a 16 layer chunk from my first forge welded billet. It was 1.3" tall, 1.7" wide and around 1.25" long. Forged this out by hand!
