Re: Anybody sharpening CPM 20 CV?

You may be better off just buying a diamond stone. Diamond will sharpen 20cv or m390 easily. You can get a decent edge using wet/dry sandpaper with silicone carbide. You could buy diamond compounds to dope stones with. But, at the end of the day you will spend less money just buying a diamond stone....

Re: Best Stropping Compound (Not an Opinion)

I have only tried the diamond powders from 6 microns down to 1 micron. Do you strop with 220 grit?

Re: Best Stropping Compound (Not an Opinion)

You can buy just about any abrasive in powder form. Just dump a very small amount of it on your strop and rub it in with a makeup brush. This is a cheap way to go. There is no dry time. I’ve been doing it for years and it works great. You should probably wear some type of face mask when you’re apply...

I’ve been worried about you Mauichef. I think you’re an awesome person for selling parts of your collection to benefit others. Good luck with the fund raising. Hopefully, the government will step up quickly

Re: Flattening the profile

Just taking a guess here. When you sharpen, do you keep your fingers on the off-hand close to the cutting edge? I’ve noticed during some thinning sessions that I could see uneven bevels around the area where I kept my fingers on the blade. Moving my fingers up to the middle of the blade road solved ...

Try this one

Spray it on and let it dry for 30 minutes or so.

Re: I cleaned my leather strop with Dawn Dish soap.

I have never tried using dawn to clean a strop. I would recommend using a solvent such as mineral spirits. If you want something that dries really fast you could use naphtha. You should use some type of rubber gloves to keep the solvent off of your skin. You might be over complicating the process of...

Re: Naniwa Gouken *ARATA* 3000 vs Naniwa Chosera 3000

Hopefully Mark will pick up some of the ARATA stones. I’ve seen the 10k for around $100. If they really are slim Naniwa Pro stones, they will probably go up in price.

Konosuke Swedish Stainless 240 gyuto. I still use the knife quite a bit. That’s my only stainless Japanese knife. Love the steel whatever it is.

Are you placing a bid Mark? That’s definitely a collector’s item. Pretty horrible profile for a cutting board though.

Re: Trying To Make A Practice Regimen

Everyone that I have noticed with a knife sharpening business uses power tools. Some have two 1x30 belt grinders. One grinder has a coarse belt and the other has a high grit or polishing belt. The other system involves the paper wheels on a bench grinder. The best sharpening service that I have seen...

Re: Strops!

This may sound crazy but I’ve had good luck using slime rubber cement to hold the wood and leather together. I used to use the green compound on my strops. It was easier to replace the leather than trying to clean it.

Re: Keeping my end grain cutting board from separating at the seams

It sounds hard to believe, but the glue joints are probably the strongest part of the board. Years ago, I made some end grain boards for gifts. I used titebond 2 for the glueups. That’s a pretty inexpensive glue but it works fine. My dad dropped the board that I made him. It landed flat on a tile fl...

Yeah I like it a lot. Definitely get vanilla and it’s nice and smooth. I like to sip it while playing the guitar after work. :) I've noticed that in WI, those Four Roses Single Barrels are always 100 proof. In IL they're usually bottled and sold at barrel strength. I'm guessing that for whatever re...

Re: 6k Soaking Stone Recommendation

I have the Suehiro traditional 6k and the 6k debado. They both seem to benefit from a good soak (45 minutes). The debado is a much better stone in my opinion. I also have a Nubatama platinum 6k. The Nubatama is the best of the three by far. I really wish that I would have purchased more Nubatama st...
