Hello,
I did a little pictorial of my process for these cute little entry level custom knife creations of mine. I made these for a local market here primarily,
but if anyone wants one just let me know. Feel free to ask questions. Thanks to Bensbites for helping me trouble shoot my heat treating
First we have the rough profiles cut from barstock with my portaband.
Profiled out.
wrapped in hi temp stainless foil. this is necessary to prevent excessive decarb.
steel is taken from 1950 deg. soak for 15 minutes and quenched between two huge plates of aluminum.
As the steel cools down to ambient it is then placed into deep freezer. this allows the max amount of retained austenite to convert to martensidte.
some nice red ranger chicken drumsticks in the background here lol.
foil packets after cold treatment, getting ready to temper to useable hardness.
Here is my kiln and you can see some of my quench plates.
scribed centerlines on the cutting edge.
bevels rough ground.
closeup showing the compound grinds.
ground to final geometry.
Handles fit up with pins for added safety and spacers to keep it all snug.
Everything epoxied. The clamps are really just holding them upright in position.
I will be sculpting and hand sanding these handles tonight.
I will have these blades in Winchendon tomorrow at the BREWFEST. We have an excellent day planned for tomorrow, Rain or Shine. The event is DOG FRIENDLY as well.

These little knives are fun, i am playing with the idea of an asymmetrical grind on the next version. so that the right bevel is more or less full flat ground. Sometimes its useful to have a really flat surface. This is kind of morphing into my camping knife, especially one i would take to festivals and other similar events.
