Magnetic Knife Block

Post by JASinIL2006 »

This was my first attempt at making a magnetic knife block. The wood is aspen and the magnets used were DA4 neodymium disks placed about 1/8" below the surface of the wood. For stability, I also embedded two 5" long pieces of 1/4" x 1.5" steel plates in the base. The block was stained and treated with several coats of spray polyurethane.

This countertop knife block was a gift for a friend. I'm currently making a magnetic knife bar for me to replace the one I have now; my current knife bar has exposed magnetic strips and they are scratching the surface of some of my clad blades, so I need something that will be gentler on the knives.

Awesome job. Lucky friend. Just finished a couple of mag bars myself. A really fun project.

I've got one in the planning stages right now. Hoping to be able to make it fit around 10 blades and be functional.

The wall-mounted knife holder I’m making for myself will have 24” of magnetized surface.

This was my first attempt and I am pleased with the results. I like that there are no fasteners visible. BTW thats my forum special upper left.

Very nice. Are you using two magnets per knife?

I wanted the flexibility of placing knives anywhere along the length of the mag bar so I routed a 1/2 inch groove and filled the length with magnets. This is a pic of one that is almost finished.

I then glue a 1/8 inch thick piece of plywood (trimmed to fit in the groove) onto the magnets.

This leaves me with a 1/2 by 1/2 groove the length of the mag bar. I then take a 1/2 by 1/2 square steel tube, cut it to length and drill holes to allow it to be mounted to the wall.

The mag bar can then be placed over the tube and is held in place by the same magnets that hold the knives on the other side.
More info than you wanted but while I was at it... :D

Actually it wasn't more than I wanted. Maybe more than I asked, but I wasn't sure you'd give all your secerts. Two final questions, what are the magnets, and where did you get them? Obviously, I want to make my own knife rack, and yours looks fantastic!

I thought there were no secrets on the forum. :D
I purchased my magnets from Jobmaster Magnets up here in Canada. Im sure you can source them in the US of A and likely for less.
These are what I used.

A wall hanger I made several years ago. It has continuous magnets and routed keyholes in the back to mount it. Problem is it only holds about a 1/4 of the knives I own. I need a few more and the wall space to hang them.

Very nice. One row of magnets in it? I ask, cause I've seen them with two rows.

I bigger house should give you more wall space, if you buy one with a large kitchen with plenty of wall space. A wall o' knives! You might have to sell the truck though.

Seems like a very similar mounting set-up as this guy, which I've been very pleased with - except yours is even better because of the continuous magnetized real estate. It still holds 8 knives so it's certainly roomy - but just allows for a single configuration.

Jeff. Maybe instead of the classic gun rack in the truck...

What...you really keep that many knives on there, or just showing how many can fit? I would knock one off for sure...or at least chip on...fat fingers.

I like the more organic shape. Could be something to try in the future.

This is a good source. It is where I started. The best part is the graph of magnet sizes. Enjoy!

If you need a US supplier I use n50 1/8x 1/2 inch neodymium magnets from magnetsforless.com. The per magnet price was the cheapest I found, but they get you on shipping. I try to buy 200 at a time.

I also like to mount to the wall using screw in keyhole hangers.

Yeah, gotta be careful when pulling one down or putting it up. It wasn't always that full but the damn mailman wouldn't quit bringing me knives! :?
