Grip Scissor Family
There were many highlights to my trip last week. This was one of them. I got to visit the family that makes the Herb Scissors (they call them grip scissors). Kind of a typical blacksmith shop with a few interesting exceptions. They husband and wife own the factory which is 2 feet from their house. This is typical in Japan where I don’t think they have any zoning laws. You can build right up to your property line and stuff as many buildings on it as will fit. No worries about mixing a noisy blacksmith workshop next to residential homes either. When I walked in, I was greeted by the owner and his wife, both of them are in their 70s and we had to get there early because they only work until lunch before quitting for the day.

Here are some pictures. The shot with me and the husband and wife is in their office. I’m on my knees and they’re standing.

Lovely little write up on those two Can you tell us their names?

Re: Grip Scissor Family
If you look at the picture of the wall with Mr. Fujii gesturing. He was telling the story of the charred wall behind him. When I asked him about it, he said he'd gotten injured a few years ago (it sounded like a stroke) so he was hospitalized for a time. His wife and brother wanted to work while he was away, so they tried starting the forge with newspaper (a job they were not familiar with) and it caught the wall on fire and it quickly spread up the wall and onto the rafters in the ceiling. Another relative ran over and put it out with an extinguisher but it nearly burned down the place. They never bothered to repair it.
I didn't ask yet but I'm going to see if they can send me some rejects so I can put them on my office wall.

I was wondering about the burnt walls too before I got to Mark's explanation. Glad he shared that explanation.cedarhouse wrote: ↑Mon May 28, 2018 8:01 pm I was going to ask about the scorched walls...

I love her hat! It looks like something that would be worn on Little House on the Prairie.
You can blame Mr. Suburban for my being here.

Yes, I'd like to hear all about the trip. Do you have any more narratives posted? The pics are fantastic.ChefKnivesToGo wrote: ↑Mon Apr 05, 2021 2:15 pm I have some more pictures of this visit if you would like to see them.
