Random Japan Photos
I thought I would show some of these. If nothing else it will give me an excuse to go through some of my personal photos since I miss traveling.

This was a tourist stop to a historical village called SHIRAKAWA-GO (GIFU PREFECTURE).

Some of the Tsukahara clan. All those crates behind us are for transporting knives from shop to shop as each task is completed. These guys sharpen 200,000 knives a year. They all have carpal tunnel in their elbows and wrists.

Thank you Mark! Keep them coming.
You can blame Mr. Suburban for my being here.

This was the grounds of a Buddhist temple on the west coast of Japan. I'll show some other shots of this place.

Beautiful pics! If you get the chance, there's a tiny town Kanazawa and they have a nice saké brewery you can tour and sample

I did a tour of a small sake shop in Sanjo that was really fun. I’ll dig up the photos of the place when I get back to work. They had a beautiful tasting room that looked out over their garden and we were the only ones there.

Re: Random Japan Photos
I have lots of pictures of my friends and I drinking for some reason.
Here's on with Koskue Kawamura, Shosui Takeda and Sada Imanishi. Takeda and Mr. Imanishi have known each other since they were both children and their fathers were doing business together.
Here's the entrance to the restaurant. One of the nicest meals I've ever had in Japan.

Re: Random Japan Photos
This was in an old ramen shop where they still have you form a line, place the order by buying a ticket and then you hand over the ticket to get a bowl of soup. I think there were about 8 stools at the counter and that was it. You can see the bags of ramen flour next to the machine. A common thing when you enter these little shops is they yell a greeting to you. It's very welcoming but loud.
Here is the shop.
Here is the shop.

This is a temple in Nara. Nara is so mobbed with tourists that it feels like a theme park and there are deer walking around the grounds mooching food. Since everyone bows to them they start bowing back.

Re: Random Japan Photos
Mark should plan a tour. I think he did something kinda like that in the past. Just told some people when he would be there and kinda directed them to some blacksmiths, etc.

Re: Random Japan Photos
If I could speak Japanese I would consider doing a tour but it would be too complicated without language skills. I'm fortunate to deal with guys that basically take me around and arrange for my transportation and then translate when I'm talking to the blacksmiths.

Re: Random Japan Photos
Kosuke's shop and his mini cooper.
This last photo shows the window that looks out into what is almost a diorama. It's a tiny garden he installed so that his window looks out into the garden instead of the concrete neighbor's house. It's lovely and you see this a lot in many small establishments. The middle shot is Kosuke's father's station where he was doing some handle installs and engraving work when I visited. The process is you get the tang red hot, push the handle on so it burns it's way into place while you manipulate it with a hammer or by hand. Then, you yank it off, put some hot glue pellets into the handle hole and then you push the handle back on and let it set.
