Meteorite damascus WIP

Post by HHH Knives »

We have started on a new project and I am taking lotsa photos and wanted to share some with all my knife knut friends here on Chef Knives to go..

The plan. forge meteorite int awesome damascus. Make a 4 pieces set..
The tie in is that many of the materials used come from the Egypt area. The meteorite and the wood. etc.

Randy Jr. started forging some Meteorite for a new project. Not just any meteorite.. We are working with something different. Its from a Meteorite that was found in Egypt. Called Gebel Kamil.. They say it struck Egypt about 5000 years ago leaving a crater surrounded by thousands of pieces of iron shrapnel it hit.
Some think it was the source of the metal used to make the Infamous King Tut Dagger..

Here are a few images>>

If I may ask that you take a second and share a ink to this thread on social. to help bring more people to the forum.. and exposure to more folks...

Meteorite is not easy work! The meteorite I’ve worked with was crumbly and didn’t want to weld. It was a real challenge! Its a different beast to work with.
The forging process needs to be done with care. And ALOT to refine the material. The process results in a material that is a more mono structure.. A material that is usable for our purpose.

Day 2. The chunk goes back into the forge and a whole day of forging later it starting to look more solid. and we have combined all the pieces into one block. That black was worked enough to fol over on itself. and more forging and refining. This is really repetitive.. But the resulting piece is looking good!

They are sideways until you click on them and then they are properly oriented. Just keep them coming!

Glad to see some of ya are liking the WIP!

And here are a few more images. This is a combination of MANY rounds of drawing and refining the meteorite. Then finally starting to combine it with high carbon steel. and starting to build the layer count. You can see in one of the images the 4 pieces of meteorite being welded to a bunch of layers of 1080
That bar is drawn and then restacked. many times
