My Blades Almost Ready For Sale

Post by Carter »

As many of you know, this past year I started working on producing my own blades to go along with the handles and sayas that I have been making for a few years. I am in the final stages of testing and am almost ready to start selling them. All the blades are made from 52100 carbon steel and are heat treated in house. The blades are testing out at 62 HRC and have survived cutting a 16 penny nail without chipping the blade and will bend 90 degrees and return straight without and cracking. The CKTG community has been very good to me over the years and I will be offering the finished blades here first. Anyway, here are some recent pics.

These blades are fully hardened and tempered using a recipe developed by Ed Fowler.

These are fully ground and polished to about 80 percent, next will be the handles, then to the stones for sharpening and then final polish.

Two of the blades that have been sent out for testing with Chef John in New Jersey....a 150mm & 240mm.

Thanks for looking.

Gorgeous stuff, Carter. What heel height are you using on your gyutos?

Thanks for the kind words...not sure on blade height...I have not measured the finished blades...I am using templates based on some of my Kono's, Masakage's and Kato's .....I will say that in a few instances I have burned the steel at the heel and have had to grind away some height where I felt the hardness of the edge was compromised.

I just checked the heel height on 3 of the 240mm blades that I heat treated and they range from 47-49mm.

Here are some new blades that are about 90% finished, I thought I would offer them for sale at this point so the buyer would have the opportunity to design a custom handle and/or saya....I will discount the handle work by 15% for these semi-custom blades. The lead time on these will be less than for a full on custom order. These are all 52100 carbon steel and have been heat treated to 62HRC. Please see each image for specifics.

The whole Photobucket hostage situation is really frustrating....I wish there was an easy way to reestablish all the photos. I just don't have time rebuild all the photos in the message threads one image at a time.

Anyway, here is a current photo of the knives in progress on my bench....these are all 52100 blades that have been heat treated. A few are spoken for, several will be available for sale soon.
