Started makinig my own sayas earlier this year. I have a pretty primative set-up. I started with a coping saw, hand chisels, & sandpaper/hand block. I recently upgraded to a handheld belt sander & a jig saw for shaping. I still carve the interior & finish by hand.
My first few all by hand:
Later on with the belt sander
And more recently once I bought the jig saw

That looks fantastic! I've seen so many "burnt" handles and sayas that were to overdone for my tastes. This one does an excellent job accenting the grain without looking like you pulled it out of a bonfire a little to late.
If God wanted me to be a vegetarian he wouldn't have made animals taste so good.
