Handmade Sayas

Started makinig my own sayas earlier this year. I have a pretty primative set-up. I started with a coping saw, hand chisels, & sandpaper/hand block. I recently upgraded to a handheld belt sander & a jig saw for shaping. I still carve the interior & finish by hand. My first few all by hand: https://i...

Re: Show us your new knife!

Just received this beautiful big boy just in time for my birthday. Kurosaki Fujin As 270. It is a big amazing cutter. took it to work today and gave it a thorough workout. The grind on it is insane. So much knife. Thanks Mark! https://i.imgur.com/NaEDW5Vl.jpg https://i.imgur.com/GCkbaoYl.jpg https:/...

Freshly sharpened & stropped

Took my new Yoshimune to work to give it a workout. Just glides right through a perfectly ripe tomato.

How does it feel using it in a pinch grip? Does it feel natural & comfortable?

Re: What's your current go to knife?

At work, I mostly grab my Kaeru 150 sld petty, & a 240mm Masakage Yuki white #2gyuto. At home, I tend to grab my Tanaka ginsan 240 gyuto & Tanaka ginsan 150 petty.

Re: Masashi Yamamoto, anyone?

Sorry to resurrect and older post but I am looking at this exact same knife and was wondering if the OP could let me know how it is. I am quite new to the forum so if this is bad form could someone let me know. Thank you. I ended up getting a 210mm sld gyuto from Masashi. It is an amazing cutter. T...

Re: Refinishing handle

FYI, I'm 99.9% that the Yuki is NOT Ho wood, but Magnolia wood, which is why it has a different feel, character, color, and density than most Ho wood handles. Although Ho and Magnolia can (and are) sometimes used as synonyms, the knives I've used with magnolia handles tend to vary and have a clearl...

Re: Show us your new knife!

Kurosaki AS 170mm ku santoku. A lot beefier than I expected. Spine is nice & thick, then tapers down. Gives the blade a workhorse feel. Cuts like a dream.

Re: No service interruptions.

Thanks guys. This helps a lot. I tried to buy a pack of 20 off eBay a couple days ago. After I paid, eBay pulled the item & flagged the seller. Now I have to wait until the 10th to file a claim. My mother-in-law is 81 & has cancer. My wife is her caregiver. We have been looking everywhere for masks ...

Re: Refinishing handle

No stain, just oil (or mixed with beeswax, if ya like); the darkness comes from the charring of the wood. I do a similar process to chocu1a, only I scrub it lightly with a plastic bristled brush instead of a scotch Brite. I hold it by the blade with the handle pointing up, since flame rises up and ...

Re: Refinishing handle

Tape off ferrule. I used a propane torch, the hand held kind for making creme brulee. Make quick short passes until you have covered the entire handle. Repeat to achieve the desired depth of char. Once done, I used a green scotch pad to smooth it out and make sure burn was even. Repeat all steps aga...
